Erik Andersson was born in Askersund in 1900, the same spring the river flooded and forced half the town's cows up onto the market square. He grew up with woodworking tools in his hands almost from infancy, and the townsfolk used to say he "could fix anything except his own temper."

He married Anna Larsdotter in 1923, and together they built a household that would eventually hold three children: Karl, Maria, and Sven. Erik died in 1975, in the very house he was born in, his toolbox still tucked under the bed.

Anna Larsdotter came from Hammar, a good hour's walk from Askersund, and according to family tradition she walked the whole way to the market in Askersund the day she first met Erik Andersson in 1922.

Anna was known for her knitted mittens, patterned in a way no one else in the parish could quite copy, and for keeping a small account book where every krona in and out of the household was noted down to the last öre. She died in 1980 in Askersund, at the age of 78.

Karl Berggren sold his share of the family farm in Lindesberg in the spring of 1893 to fund the crossing of the Atlantic. He and his wife Anna Sjö boarded the ship in Gothenburg that April, with a single packed trunk and the promise of work at a timber company in Minnesota.

Nine years in the new world gave them a son, Oskar, born on American soil in 1897. But homesickness won out in the end - the family returned to Örebro County in 1902, and Karl would later say that "Minnesota gave us bread, but Sweden gave us ground to stand on."

According to family stories, Anna Sjö wrote regularly to her sisters in Hallsberg during the nine years in Minnesota. None of the letters survive, but the memory of them lives on: she is said to have described the snow as "deeper than a person is tall," and the mosquitoes in summer as "worse than every plague in the Bible combined."

When the family finally returned in 1902, she said the only thing she missed from America was the American sewing machine - which came along in the luggage.

Sven Eriksson, the youngest of Erik and Anna's three children, first married Frida Holmberg in 1952, at just 22 years old. The marriage lasted three years and produced a daughter, Rut, before ending in divorce in 1955 - a split that raised more than a few eyebrows in the small parish.

Sven remarried, to Britta Svensson, and had a son, Nils. The two children, Rut and Nils, grew up as half-siblings who never lived under the same roof, but reportedly stayed in touch their whole lives.

Rut Svensson was christened at Askersund Church in January 1954, in the middle of the coldest winter in years. According to the parish record, it was so cold the christening water nearly iced over before the priest could begin.

Rut would later become known in the family for always remembering everyone's birthday - a trait that made her the natural connecting thread between her father's two families.

Ester Lundqvist married Bengt Karlsson in 1980, a few years after his divorce from Margareta Olsson. Ester came from a large family with roots in Nora and Lindesberg, and brought with her a long line of ancestors stretching back to the 1860s on both sides.

She and Bengt never had children together, but by all family accounts Ester became a beloved step-grandmother to both Peter's and Anna's families, known for her long walks and for always keeping candied ginger in her pocket.

Viktor Bengtsson was born in March 2005 and adopted by Peter Bengtsson and Sofia Lind that same summer, when he was only a few months old. He grew up alongside his older sister Emma, and by all family accounts the two have never made a distinction between "real" and "adopted" siblings - Viktor himself says he simply got two family trees instead of one, which he finds quite handy at Christmas dinner.

The adoption was celebrated with a big party in Örebro, where both sets of grandparents signed the guestbook with the same pen.

Emma Petersdotter, daughter of Peter Bengtsson and Sofia Lind, was christened at Örebro Cathedral in June 2000 with five generations gathered in the pews - something family memory says had never happened before at a christening in this family.

Her great-great-grandmother Elin Fors had died only a year before Emma was born, but several of the family's elders were still alive and able to tell the newborn girl about Askersund, Minnesota, and everything in between - a girl who would one day become big sister to Viktor.
