Website Privacy

This page describes what happens when you visit pastpaths.se. How the PastPaths program itself handles your data is described in the privacy policy for the program.

Summary

The website uses no cookies and contains no analytics or tracking scripts. Everything shown on the pages – text, images, fonts, and scripts – is delivered from pastpaths.se. The website therefore does not contact Google or any other external service while you read it.

Data only leaves the website when you choose it yourself: when you download the program from GitHub, follow a link to another website, send an email, or sign up for the mailing list.

Web hosting and server logs

pastpaths.se is hosted by the web hosting provider Oderland in Sweden. Like all web servers, the server records technical details about each request in server logs, including IP address, time, which page or file was requested, and which browser was used. The logs are used for operations and security and are handled according to Oderland's routines.

The same applies when the PastPaths program fetches packages from the Place Library. The requests are recorded in the server logs in the same way as an ordinary visit, with IP address, time, which file was requested, and the program's name (PastPaths-PlaceLibrary/1). No data from your genealogy database is sent. Read more in the privacy policy for the program.

Fonts and scripts that the website needs are fetched once when the website is built and are then stored on pastpaths.se. Your browser loads them from there, not from any external service.

The search function runs entirely in your browser. What you search for is not sent to the server or to anyone else.

Local storage in the browser

The website saves a few display preferences in your browser's local storage, for example whether you have chosen light or dark mode. This information stays in your browser and is not sent to the server. You can delete it at any time by clearing the site data for pastpaths.se in your browser.

Downloads from GitHub

The installation files for PastPaths are hosted on GitHub. Information about which versions are available is fetched from GitHub when the website is built, so visiting the pages does not involve any requests to GitHub.

When you click a download button or a link to GitHub, the content is fetched directly from GitHub. GitHub then receives your IP address and standard browser information and processes them according to its own privacy statement.

Email

If you sign up as a tester or write to support@pastpaths.se, your own email program opens. Your email address and what you write are used only to reply to you and for the testing work, and are not passed on to anyone else.

Mailing list

You can sign up for an email list to get an email when a new version of PastPaths is released. The list runs on the Mailman program at the web hosting provider Oderland in Sweden. What is stored is your email address and, if you choose it, which language you want system messages in.

  • The address is used only for emails about new versions. It is not shown to other subscribers and is not passed on.
  • You confirm your sign-up via an email before you are added to the list.
  • The address is kept for as long as you are subscribed. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email, and your address is then removed.
  • The list is one-way. If you reply to an email, your reply goes to support@pastpaths.se.

The processing is based on your consent, which you can withdraw by unsubscribing.

The website contains links to other websites, for example GitHub, OpenStreetMap, and the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection. When you follow such a link, that website's own terms and privacy policy apply.
